The Gnomon Workshop – Creating Efficient Digital Doubles for VFX   Overview

Learn how to create digi doubles for VFX production quickly and efficiently without sacrificing on quality using an industry-standard workflow. This 3-hour workshop by Pat Imrie is aimed at beginners without any experience creating a digital double, though the information included will also be helpful for seasoned professionals looking to expand their knowledge and update their workflow.

Pat’s goal with this workshop is to replicate as closely as possible what it would be like to work on a digi double task in a studio setting. Using scan data from Clear Angle Studios, a supplier of scan data for the film and TV industries, the workshop kicks off with a lesson about how to prepare the scan data in order to maximize how it can be used to create an asset at multiple levels of detail. He then explains in detail how to use Wrap by Faceformto match the base mesh to the scan data before exploring various techniques that can be used for quickly replicating the clothing using Maya and ZBrush.

Additionally, Pat walks through how to build a basic-pose rig to help repose the asset and looks at how to project and test texture maps to ensure the asset is properly prepared to pass on to other departments.

By completing this workshop, you will have gained a better understanding of the workflows used to create high-quality digi doubles and what their place is within a production pipeline.

The base mesh topology that Pat created specifically for this workshop is included as a Project File in .OBJ and .FBX formats

We are going to start this course by fracturing our Hand geometry using voronoi and boolean techniques.

Procedural SOP Setup

After we create our fractured pieces, we are going to set up the assembly animation entirely at the SOP level.

The motion of the pieces will be determined by curves that we can art direct and change in real time, without having to resimulate anything.

So we are going to create this assembly animation without the use of any solvers.

Custom Particle Movement

After we set up the geometry assembly, the other layers will be created in more of the traditional way, with the help of solvers.

For the particle streams, we’re going to base the movement on the curves that we created for our assembly.

Here we will use an advanced setup in VOPs to have complete control over the motion

Welcome to a new VFX Course!

Vellum Cloth

In this 6 hours course you will learn how to create energy FX, explosions, cloth simulations, and even creating environments and secondary effects. Using Vellum we’ll be able to art direct cloth movement.

I’ll show you how to create a simple smoke simulation to drive the flying of the cape.

Energy FX

The energy and blast FX are achieved through a combination of Pyro and POPs. Leveraging the divergence field and creating custom velocity fields, we’ll be able to art direct simulations.

Rendering

In the rendering section I will show you how to set up all the materials, lights, render passes and AOVs. We’ll go over various tips and tricks over how to best set up custom passes and optimize scenes for speed.

Compositing

The second half will be compositing in Nuke. We bring each layer in one by one, starting from the environment and all the way to the FX.

We’ll recreate the beauty pass for each layer to have complete control over the grading. In this compositing section we’ll explore industry standard practices, and also have some fun with post FX like glow, distortions, and flare effects.

Creating the terrain

We will be creating this entire scene in Houdini from scratch, including all the effects, geometry, and compositing.

We will start by first creating a terrain, using the heightfield workflow.

We are going to use multiple cutting techniques to obtain fractured pieces only where we need them.

For the simulation we will create a custom vector that will drive the movement of our pieces.

And then we will create some small rock debris which we add on top of our simulation to add more variation and realism.

Lightning FX and Rays

For the lightning we will create the geometry in various ways. We will use a combination of POP simulations,

copy to points techniques, and attribute vops to have complete control over the lightning.

From our fractured pieces we will create some volumetric rays to add on top of the lightning.

Debris Smoke and Dirt

And finally we will use our fractured geometry to create the smoke debris and another layer of particles which

will essentially act as dirt.

Render and composite

In the rendering section I will go over how we can setup different renders for each layer that also contains AOV’s,

to have complete control over each of our elements.

In the Nuke section we will bring everything together to complete the final look. This part will be fairly

straightforward, with the occasional tips and tricks, and some of my favorites nodes that I use on daily basis.
